biography matthew herbert - short

Matthew Herbert is successfully working in various musical fields for many years, whether as a DJ, producer or remixer. Björk, REM, John Cage, Yoko Ono and Ennio Morricone are among others his most famous collaborations, and for the ex-Moloko singer Róisín Murphy, he produced the successful solo debut.
The multi-talented Herbert delightes with his multi-faceted music, from club music to big band jazz, and has already worked with renowned directors such as Ridley Scott and Étienne Chatiliez and choreographers and theater directors.
In 1999 Herbert produces his first soundtrack with Rob Mellow for Justin Kerrigan's internationally acclaimed "Human Traffic". Herbert samples sounds from nature, technics and environment, which are the basic for his productions.  He uses construction and electronical alienation for album projects such as "One Pig" or filmscores like Matteo Garrone's "Gomorrha".

In 2017 Herbert composed the Filmscore for Sebastian Lelios praised film "A Fantastic Woman", which celebrates its premiere that same year at the Berlinale and is honored with the Teddy Award and Silbernen Bären. Herbert's Score is honorably mentioned in Variety, as well as in Hollywood-Reporter. At the moment they are both working together for a further film project, hereby Matthew Herbert is composing and producing the filmscore for Sebastian Lelios film "Disobedience". In 2006 Herbert receives the prize for the best film music for Santiago Taberneros "Vida y Color" at the Festival de Cine Latinoamericano Toulouse. With the French exceptional director Etienne Chatiliez Herbert works in 2004 for "La Confience rain" and in 2008 for "Agathe Cléry" and in 2011 he writes the film score for Ridley Scott's production of Kevin Macdonald's "Life In A Day - A Day on Earth". With his film music compositions Herbert seeks a fusion of image and sound to achieve a chronological and thematic unity.

Matthew Herbert's numerous pseudonyms, such as Radioboy, Doctor Rockit, Herbert and Wishmountain he chooses for various musical projects reflect his diversity. In 2000 he founded the label Accidental Records and produced for different musicians, like The Invisible and Rowdy Superstar. Herbert calls himself an outsider, because he "wants to make music understandable as a process, not as a product". For this purpose, Herbert puts everyday sounds into new aesthetic contexts and creates an original sound world, which is fed by the reality.
